Liturgical Music Ministry

At Mt. Olive, our worship music praises God and shares the thoughts and sounds of both the present and the past. In our liturgical worship service, we share these ancient and modern hymns as a community. In addition to this 8 a.m. service, we have a blended worship service that takes place at 10:30 a.m. For more information on the late service, click here.

Meet the Music Minister

Kathleen
Thomerson
Kathleen Thomerson has been Organist and Music Director at Mount Olive since 2004. She has the Master of Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin, with additional musical studies in France, Belgium, Spain, and Switzerland. She received Fellowship and Choirmaster Certificates from the American Guild of Organists. A published composer, she has one hymn included in the new Lutheran Service Book. She and her husband Jamie have three grown children.

Pipe Organ History

The organ was originally built by the Estey Organ Company of Vermont in 1924 for the First Baptist Church of Jamesville, Wisconsin. It had 12 ranks of pipes. In 1974 it was sold to St. Matthew's Lutheran in Janesville and 9 more ranks were added when it was moved there. The organ was sold in 1993 to Mount Olive Church, and moved to Austin by Larry Marowsky and Norman Holmes. Many members of this congregation have been involved in rebuilding it in our previous location, and moving it to our new campus in 2005. The two-manual organ presently has 34 ranks. Norman Holmes of Concordia University in Austin was in charge of the new installation, with George Price of Houston doing the final tonal finishing. The organ is played each week for the 8 a.m. worship service, and at both services on Christmas and Easter.
